Monthly Newsletter: August 2025

Welcome to the MCC newsletter, providing a quick update on key developments across our projects, capabilities, and industry insights.
In this edition, we highlight some key projects we have delivered with Partners, and an opportunity for you to provide feedback on the EPBC Protected Matters Search Tool.
Do you use the EPBC Protected Matters Search Tool?
Recently, MCC was invited to participate in a survey on how the PMST is used and how it could be improved. We have a list of long-standing issues we plan to raise, but we’d also like to hear from you!
If you’ve experienced challenges, spotted inaccuracies, or even have positive feedback about the tool, let us know. Your input will help us provide well-rounded feedback to the regulator—and hopefully drive meaningful improvements for everyone. Reach out to admin@mccfutures.com.au

Innovative Ocean Financing: Ocean Conservation Commitments
Recently we worked with the Niue Ocean Wide team to help them develop and write their 2024 Annual Report. You can read about the wonderful work they are doing, and importantly the impact they are having as a result of the successful development of the Ocean Conservation Commitments. OCCs are an innovative nature financing mechanism, protecting 40% of Niue's EEZ while also supporting both livelihoods and conservation outcomes. Congratulations to the NOW team.
We also purchased Ocean Conservation Commitments (equivalent to 4km2) in 2023 and it is wonderful to now see the activities & impact they are supporting.
Sustainability/ESG Reporting with Austral Fisheries
MCC recently partnered with Austral Fisheries to provide technical support and guidance on the identification and collection of ESG data for reporting. Our team worked with Austral to:
- Complete a materiality assessment to understand Austral ESG (material) ‘hot topics’.
- Develop a data template and support Austral to collate relevant ESG data to inform an ESG/Sustainability Report they are developing; and
- Helped Austral prepare for AASB S1 reporting
It is always a pleasure to work with organisations like Austral Fisheries who are genuinely committed to sustainable outcomes for the ocean.
We work with all ocean industries to help them begin and navigate their own sustainability journey. Download our ESG capability statement below.
