Strengthening action on blue carbon and the ocean-climate nexus under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

Overview
Conservation International’s work focuses on the strengthening of blue carbon commitments and the ocean-climate nexus under the UNFCCC and related international policy processes in 2023.
Challenges
Conservation International works to strengthen commitments to blue carbon through engagement in international policy processes, particularly within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This involves conducting policy analyses, preparing key documents like policy briefs, and contributing to strategic initiatives that aim to enhance the conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems.
Conservation International required the services of a consultant to review and update the ‘Blue Carbon and Naturally determined Contributions Guidelines on Enhanced Actions’ document and the UNFCCC Ocean Climate Options Paper.

Solutions
MCC worked with Conservation International to provide blue carbon policy support and development including review of the first guideline draft of the ‘Blue Carbon and Naturally determined Contributions, Guidelines on Enhanced Actions’ document and identified additional areas in need of revision.
MCC also worked on the Oceans Climate dialogue support to the UN, including reviewing and updating the ‘Options for Strengthening Action on the Ocean and Coasts under the UNFCCC’ to reflect developments from COP 27 and to identify the top priorities for ocean-climate action at SB 58.
Implemenation
MCC provided support to Conservation International to update and finalise both the guidelines document and UNFCCC ocean-climate options paper in 2023, to reflect the latest developments and opportunities under ongoing UNFCCC processes.
Results
By conducting policy analyses and preparing policy briefs and other key deliverables MCC assisted Conservation International to strengthen the ocean-climate nexus and accelerate the conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems under the UNFCCC, SDGs, CBD and Ramsar, in advance of strategic opportunities including the UNFCCC Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue in Bonn, Germany (June 2023) and the UN Climate Change Conference (November 2023).
